No team is going to touch Tootoo with that kind of salary unless the Wings eat a chunk of that salary. This glut of 3rd / 4th line forwards could have been avoided if Holland hadn't signed Cleary or given Samuelsson that ridiculous contract. This team needs Eaves and Nyquist especially back in the lineup NOW !
Still having Nyquist in GR is just plain stupid at this point. |

The wings need toughness and character. They have been flat out dull the past several years. Even when they are winning, they're extremely boring to watch.
Tootoo is not the answer either. Ever since he put down the drink, he's been pretty stale. But then again, he plays for the wings...
Holland is the most overrated GM in the history of the game...

That comment is not even worth debating lol shows you have no clue what you're talking about. Somehow the most overrated gm in the league has a 20 year playoff streak and a talented forward pool of prospects not to mention top Dmen in every league...Dekeyser, Sproul, Oulette, Backman, Marchenko, Almquist, Jensen..
Yep overrated |

Yeah, he is overrated. What has he done recently? Has he addressed the needs of the team?
He signs Weiss, Alfredsun, and Samuelsson instead of gritty players to compliment the skill of Zetterberg and Datsuck.
Yes, he is overrated. |

I'm not a troll. I just can't stand the wings and the organization in general. They have had a huge hand in the decline of rough stuff, fighting, scrums, etc.
If i want to watch a team play without an edge, character, and toughness, i wil watch paint dry, aka, KHL Hockey |

Yes... agreed. I usually ignore him because he's a mental midget troll. He's been hating the Wings for the last 5 years on this site. He doesn't know anything about the Red Wings (or the NHL in general)... which is very obvious from some of his ridiculous comments. |

Hey Mark, just wondering if you think they will waive eaves or another move to get Nyquist in the roster? - HomestyleMelt
Wings need to keep Eaves... Cleary should be sitting on the bench. Eaves is a good depth player for our bottom six forwards. He has good speed and is an excellent penalty killer. His value only increases in the playoffs. If Eaves gets put on waivers... he will get claimed in a second. |

I think that's exactly why they sent toots through waivers. Eaves is about to be back or is back right? |

Greater chance you see Sammy get waived (for the roster spot).
Trades are going to be difficult until closer to the trade deadline or if Detroit bites a chunk of the salary in the instance of a Tootoo or perhaps if they were extremely fortunate, Samuelsson (who would have to waive NTC).

I'm not doubting that eaves is valuable id like him on the 4th line on a regular basis...I'm just saying he is the one who has been mentioned...obviously Sammy would be ideal it just seems there are so many restrictions with his NTC...I just want nyquist up very badly... A line of him Abby and Tatar would be unreal or even throw helm with them two |

Based on my quick math (and I could be missing a loophole here - they get paid to find these, I don't), unless the Red Wings put another player on LTIR in the meanwhile or make a trade, the D-day for figuring out this mess is looking like it might be November 15, which is when Ericsson is projected to come off LTIR.
By the time Ericsson comes off, even if the Red Wings have demoted Almquist and Coreau (who was swapped with Mrazek in a paper move on Monday) and sent Tootoo to Grand Rapids, they'd still be about $257,000 over the cap with a 23-man roster and no waiver-exempt players.
At that point, if they haven't managed to trade anybody and nobody else has gone on LTIR, they'd have no choice but to waive and re-assign an additional player on non-35-plus contract, which unfortunately rules out Samuelsson and probably means Eaves (even though it should be Cleary).
In that scenario, the Wings would be about $668,000 under the cap for 22 players, which is not enough to fit Nyquist in. If the Red Wings needed an extra body up front they would likely go to Emmerton or Glendening, or possibly Jurco or Pulkkinen (Sheahan would put them over the cap, believe it or not).
Even if it was enough to fit Nyquist in, there's no guarantee the Red Wings would go that route, considering they seem to be pretty determined to keep him in the AHL until they can create a permanent solution to their cap and roster issues, which demoting Tootoo and Eaves would not entirely accomplish (since they would be so close to the cap that they would have basically no flexibility for short-term callups).
In short, Ken Holland is probably secretly praying for Mikael Samuelsson to break his femur sometime before next Friday so that he can keep milking the LTIR cow and not potentially get himself into an ugly situation once Ericsson gets healthy. |

Solid analysis.
Can the Wings institute a NOLA Saints type bounty on their own player (Sammy/Cleary)? You know, get things moving a little bit |

Mark.... if by some miracle they put Samuelsson on waivers (instead of Eaves) to open a roster spot (and we know he won't get claimed) I'm assuming the collective bargaining rules won't allow Detroit to send Sammy to Grand Rapids. Is that correct ?? He'd just be sitting on the bench I'm guessing. |

Not sure if anybody is keeping up with the Grand Rapids Griffins.... I went to one of the games last week. Holy cow this team is STACKED. Sproul has one cannon of a shot. Griffins should make a deep playoff run. Pulkinnen is really starting to put up some points.
Jurco is a guaranteed top 6 forward. This kid reminds me of Sergei Fedorov when he's on his game. I'd say he has the most raw talent of anybody in Grand Rapids and he's still like only 21 years old I think.
Oh... and I saw Chris Chelios at the game too. He walked right by me in a suit. |

He could be assigned to Grand Rapids, but since he's on a multiyear 35+ deal the Red Wings would only get $100,000 in cap relief from the transaction, instead of the $925,000 they would get by sending down anyone else (besides Bertuzzi, who also has a 35+ contract).
Unfortunately, that's not enough. Even with Tootoo ($925K) and Sammy ($100k) in Grand Rapids, the Red Wings would still be over the cap once Ericsson returns, unless another player is moved or placed on LTIR. |

Working on a blog for later tonight on their cap issues. Based on my calculations, by the 15th (barring any long-term injuries being incurred), they would be cap compliant but only a third of the potential performance bonuses that could get paid would be covered. |
